Independent and related datasets

Last changed in 17/07/2026

A dataset is the data source of a widget in a Vision dashboard. You can create as many datasets as needed, but it's important to keep in mind how information is organized between them.

Independent datasets

Each dataset is independent of the others.

Unlike other data models, Vision doesn't use star or snowflake-type structures. Each dataset must contain all the information the widget needs to display its data, since a widget can only have one dataset as its data source.

If the data comes from a star-type relational model, it must be transformed into a flat structure so that the Vision dataset contains all the information needed for the visualization.

Related datasets

In some cases, several datasets can share the same business logic and, as a result, contain common information.

For example, an Events dataset may have a related Actions dataset, where an event has one or more associated actions.

Relationship between two entities with common fields

When two datasets contain common information, the shared fields can be identified in two ways:

  • By assigning the same identifier to the same field in each dataset where it appears;
  • By setting up a relationship or field mapping between different datasets in the dashboard where they are used.
